Southampthon vs Chelsea .
Chelsea know it is now or never for their Champions Leaguehopes as the Blues face a trip to Southampton on Saturday.
Champions Chelsea have won just three Premier League games in 2018, with five defeats in their last eight top-flight matches – and a 1-1 home draw against West Ham last weekend – leaving them 10 points off of the top four.
The Blues are not out of the running just yet, but realistically cannot afford to drop any more points if they are to catch Tottenham.
What does count is their display at the Emirates last weekend. Southampton’s fine performance in the 3-2 defeat at Arsenal might be a turning point, especially if they can back it up with another good performance – and ideally a result – against Chelsea today. It’s their first home match for six weeks, and a chance to change the narrative story of their season. A win would take them out of the relegation places, for a few hours at least, and give them plenty of momentum.
Chelsea have been in similarly abysmal form in 2018, with 12 points from 11 games. They can’t finish higher than their current fifth place, and their league campaign has drifted into a nihilistic nothingness. The two teams meet again in the FA Cup semi-finals next weekend. That’s the game that really matters to Chelsea. Southampton would happily sacrifice it for a win today.
