Uzbekistan’s World Cup qualification hopes are dealt with a blow after the 1-0 defeat away at Syria. They were in control of the match for longer periods, but a cheap penalty in the dying seconds cost them a vital point. Uzbekistan remain at third position in Group B, but Syria have now moved closer to them at a point distance.

The defeat at Syria is Uzbekistan’s second loss in a row after having picked 3 wins and a draw from the first four matches.

Qatar were pushed to the rock bottom of the group after the 1-0 home loss to Iran. They have four points to their name, which means they will be out of the qualification race if they drop points against the Uzbeks on Tuesday.
