Champions League (CL) winners Liverpool take on Europa League (EL) champions Chelsea in the 44th UEFA Super Cup (USC). This will be the first-ever all-English USC, and it’s already ‘advantage Liverpool’, given that this match has been won by the reigning CL holders 23 times (53.49%).
The match will be played at Vodafone Park in Istanbul, Turkey on 14 August 2019. The match will be the first all-English UEFA Super Cup, and the eighth overall Super Cup to feature two teams from the same country.
Liverpool was also the last English side to win this trophy, doing so in 2005, and this will be their sixth appearance (W3, L2). Victory would see the ‘Reds’ move to joint-second in the all-time list behind Barcelona and Milan (five USC wins each). Encouragingly, Liverpool is unbeaten in six UEFA competition matches against fellow English sides (W4, D2).
Chelsea is appearing in its fourth Super Cup (W1, L2), losing in both 2012 and 2013. Their recent start to the Premier League campaign could not have been worse with Frank Lampard’s first match in charge ending in a 4-0 loss to Manchester United.
Against Liverpool, however, Chelsea has conceded more than one goal just once in the last six competitive H2Hs (W2, D3, L1). Three of those matches ended 1-1, and a whopping 75% of the goals in these matches arrived after the break.
Players to watch: Second goalscorer vs Norwich on Friday night, Mohamed Salah (LIV) scored a screamer from outside the box in the second half of the last H2H.
Olivier Giroud (CHE), meanwhile, showed his European pedigree by scoring in the EL final, and he’s scored six goals in 11 starts against Liverpool.
Stat attack: The CL winner has won seven of the last ten finals, five of which have needed either extra time (four times) or penalties (once) to be decided.
Liverpool has won three of four UEFA penalty shootouts entered, while Chelsea has won just two of five.
Across the 43 previous USC finals, five red cards have been shown and just one own goal scored.
