In one of the most open and unpredictable groups of the 2018 World Cup (WC), Poland and Senegal lift the curtains on Group H at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.
After a table-topping qualification campaign, the Poles then stuttered in the following three friendlies – failing to score in any and losing two. However, they have picked-up form since, with a three-match unbeaten run (W2, D1) scoring nine goals.
Defensive worries however, continue to plague Poland who have kept just one clean sheet in their last five games. With key defender Kamil Glik out injured, it may only get worse for them.
Senegal are playing in only their second-ever WC campaign, but have a clutch of players from the Premier League manning their midfield. The African powerhouses will be a tough side to beat, as can be seen from the fact that they have lost only once in five friendlies (W1, D3, L1).
By staying unbeaten in nine qualification matches (W5, D4), Senegal have proven that they can be stubborn opponents. Having conceded just three goals in seven of those games, they have also shown great defensive pedigree.
This will be the first meeting between these sides.
Players to watch: It will be a clash of top-strikers as Robert Lewandowski (POL) and Sadio Mané (SEN) hope to continue their goal-scoring exploits.
Stat attack: Poland scored two or more goals in nine of their ten qualifying matches, while seven of those matches ended with both teams scoring.
Nine of Poland’s last 12 matches resulted in over 2.5 match goals.
Poland have failed to score in six of their last eight matches at a WC finals, losing all six.
Senegal have kept three clean sheets in their last four matches.
Senegal have lost only one of their five matches at a WC finals (W2, D2, L1).
