Manchester united vs Southampton .
Whatever José Mourinho says about not having enough money – a £261m spend, anyone? – the bottom line is Manchester United are 15 points behind rivals Manchester City after 20 games. It means the title is all but over and so the manager’s job is to ensure United finish second. At the moment they are a point ahead of Chelsea so victory over Southampton is essential. Jamie Jackson
After two draws on the bounce, Jose Mourinho will be hoping his Manchester United side can get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
It’s the final game of the year and a win will see United move three points closer to league leaders Manchester City who don’t play until tomorrow.
But Mourinho won’t be able to change things much from the side that drew at home to Burnley because of injuries. He confirmed to MUTV that none of the injured players who missed the Boxing Day draw will be available.
That means Marouane Fellaini, Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick and Eric Bailly are definitely out.Chris Smalling is also expected to miss the game.
Mourinho said Anthony Martial and Matteo Darmian were unavailable after they picked up knocks but the Frenchman was spotted arriving at the Lowry Hotel with this team-mates so could feature.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton travel to Old Trafford having picked up three points in their last seven games. United, on the other hand, continue to lead the pack in pursuit of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who have now won 18 times on the trot. Mourinho’s side have drawn their previous two games against Burnley and Leicester, leaving them 15 points adrift of City. With Chelsea now only a point behind United, Mourinho will be desperate to return to winning ways before a trip to Goodison Park on New Year’s Day.
Southampton have won only one of their past 11 games, and won’t fancy their chances here. Goals for the Saints have come in short supply this season, with 20 so far in the league. Pellegrino’s men have also failed to keep a clean sheet since October and will need to either stop conceding so frequently or find a way of scoring on a regular basis over the coming weeks.
