The absolutely irresistible force that is Liverpool continued their 100% start to the season in the Champions League (CL) in midweek with victory over PSG (3-2), cementing their best start to a season since the Premier League formed, and the European Cup became the CL, in 1992.
Jurgen Klopp praised his Liverpool side following their famous midweek win; “…no mountain is too high for my Liverpool to scale”, said the German. Indeed, since the start of last season, Liverpool have scored 50 goals in 16 CL games – comfortably more than any other side also in the CL this term.
The ‘Saints’ are not having such a strong start to the season, and have picked up just one win from their first five Premier League (PL) games (W1, D2, L2). This is an identical start to their 2016/17 campaign when the ‘Saints’ ended up recovering to finish eighth.
Mark Hughes has a dismal record when up against Klopp (D1, L5). However, Klopp’s record vs Southampton leaves something to be desired (W3, D3, L3), although the German is unbeaten in three (W2, D1).
Players to watch: Liverpool are yet to lose a game when James Milner scores (W13, D3). The midfield stalwart has bagged two penalties this term.
