The fight for survival goes head to head with the hunt for the title as Huddersfield welcome Manchester City to Kirklees Stadium. The home side are bottom of the league and eight points adrift of safety, and earlier this week parted ways with manager David Wagner in an attempt to better a points return of just 0.5 per match.
Last season, a heroic draw against City in May was part of Huddersfield’s remarkable late escape from relegation. This season’s match against the ‘Citizens’ ended in a 6-1 thumping defeat however, and they enter this match with eight defeats in their last nine matches (D1).
At home, ‘Terriers’ fans have had little to cheer for this season with just a single Premier League (PL) win so far (W1, D2, L8), and a measly five home goals in eleven matches. Huddersfield have so far met three of the current ‘Top six’ teams here, all ended in defeats to nil.
City, meanwhile, have recovered from their Christmas woes, and have turned two straight defeats into five straight wins in all competitions. Goals have again been flowing, with Pep Guardiola’s men scoring 24 goals in the last five matches (in all competitions).
In the PL, City have been markedly worse playing away than home this season (W6, D2, L2). Home and away, they’ve won all six of their matches against teams currently in the bottom five, with a combined goal score of 25-4.
Players to watch: Mathias Jorgensen, Philip Billing and Christopher Schindler all have five yellow cards or more for Huddersfield this season. Focusing on other things, Sergio Agüero has ten PL goals so far – and scored a hat-trick in the reverse fixture.
Stat attack: Huddersfield have been losing at half-time in nine of their 15 defeats this season.
The three PL H2Hs between these teams average over three yellow cards (3.33).
In City’s last five away PL matches, 69% of the goals have come in the first half.
