It’s the second matchday in Group F and reigning World Champions Germany are already under pressure after their poor start against Mexico (1-0 loss). Sweden won 1-0 against South Korea in their own opener, and another win all but puts them through to the knockout-stages.
Sweden’s opening win was the first time since the 1958 World Cup (WC) that the nation has won its first game of a tournament. Encouragingly, Swedish sides have won their last three WC matches falling on ‘matchday two’.
By contrast, the Germans traditionally struggle in second matches at the group stage, returning a meagre record of: W1, D4, L1 since the 1994 WC. Worse yet for Germany, the reigning champion of three of the last four WC tournaments (2002, 2010 and 2014) have failed to make it through the group stage.
These two sides have met four times before at a WC tournament, with Germany winning three times and losing once. In competitive H2H matches, Germany have a good overall record against Sweden, standing at: W8, D3, L1.
Players to watch: Marco Reus will be one to watch with his powerful offensive strategy set to give a composed Swedish defence a lot to think about.
Sweden’s experienced captain Andreas Granqvist scored a winning penalty in the first match and will once more be looking to lead by example.
Stat attack: 1982 was the last time Germany lost their opening game. They went on to reach the final that year!
Sweden have lost only two of their last nine international games, with six clean sheets in that sequence.
Germany are unbeaten in their last seven games against Sweden (W5, D2) with five of them producing over 2.5 goals.
However, the Germans have won only once in their last seven international games against all opponents (W1, D3, L3).
