Good News to all fans, The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced today that 38-year old referee, Takuto Okabe will be officiating the 2019 Shopee FA Cup final between Perak and Kedah this Saturday (27th July 2019) at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil.
Okabe will be assisted by two Assistant Referees also from Japan, Akane Yagi, 45 and Osamu Nomura, 30.
This is the first time in history that FAM and the Malaysian league governing body, Malaysian Football League (MFL) appoint foreign referees to officiate in a domestic cup final.
Meanwhile, local referee, Razlan Joffri Ali, 34, has been named as the fourth official or reserve referee for the said match.
Okabe who is one of the main referees for the J1 League has been a Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) referee since 2015.
His experience includes officiating in the 2015 World University Games (Universiade) in Gwangju, South Korea, the 2017 Universiade in Chinese Taipei and the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
Besides that, Okabe has also officiated AFC Champions League and AFC Cup matches for the past four years from 2016 to 2019.
Yagi has been a FIFA assistant referee since 2009 and has experiences officiating in the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia, the 2015 U-20 World Cup in New Zealand and the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship in China plus AFC Champions League and AFC Cup matches from 2015 to 2019.
Nomura, the youngest referee among the three from Japan has just been recognized as a FIFA assistant referee in 2019 and has been officiating AFC Champions League matches this season.
The three of them are expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur late this evening.
They will be attending the final day of the FIFA MA Refereeing Course & 2019 Malaysia Cup and 2019 Challenge Cup Referee’s Seminar in Shah Alam tomorrow morning to share their experiences with the local referees.
