Bayern Munich welcome Ajax to the Allianz Arena for the ninth meeting between these sides, with both looking to build on their winning start to their respective Champions League (CL) campaigns.
One of the favourites for the CL title, the Bavarians defeated Benfica 2-0 away in their CL opener. Bayern’s league form has been a little worrying of late however, after gaining just one point from their last two Bundesliga games (D1, L1).
However, Niko Kovaç – taking charge of his first Bayern CL home fixture – will take confidence from his team’s highly impressive home record in the competition. The hosts have lost just twice in their last 23 games (W19, D2, L2).
A flurry of second-half goals was what got Ajax all three points as they beat AEK Athens 3-0 at home in their CL opening match. That result made it nine CL games unbeaten (including qualifying fixtures) for the Dutch (W5, D4). Interestingly, that game was also the eighth Ajax match in a row (in all competitions), where both teams had failed to score.
In the current CL format, Bayern have played Ajax four times, with each team winning once. The Dutch have never won at this venue, with their last visit resulting in a 4-0 win to Bayern in 2004.
Players to watch: Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski has been directly involved in five goals (four goals, one assist) in six competitive outings this season.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has popped up with six goals in seven top-flight games for Ajax so far.
Stat attack: Bayern have scored at least twice in nine of their last 11 CL games, and have got a first-half goal in each of their last three.
