Bayern Munich starts a twelfth consecutive season in the group stages of the Champions League (CL), with last season’s Round-of-16 elimination to Liverpool the first time they’ve failed to reach the quarter-finals since 2010/11. Their recent record in the group stages of the competition at home has been phenomenal (W14, D1, L0).
Those 15 group stage home games have seen Bayern score 47 goals at an average of 3.13 per game, and keep ten clean sheets. That strength at the back hasn’t been evident this season though, with five of their six domestic games seeing them concede, with the last four against them coming in the first half.
Red Star Belgrade have made it through to the CL group stage for a second successive season after negotiating four qualifying rounds. They finished bottom of their group last season (W1, D1, L4), losing each of their away games to higher-seeded teams by at least a two-goal margin.
Currently enjoying a perfect start to the domestic season by winning all six of their opening league games, Red Star is nonetheless without a clean sheet in their last six competitive matches overall – although the last time they conceded more than two goals was 22 competitive games ago.
Players to watch: Robert Lewandowski (BAY) has seven Bundesliga goals this season and seven CL goals in his last four group games!
Milan Pavkov’s (RED) six goals this campaign, including two in CL qualifying, have included three strikes from the 88th minute onwards.
Stat attack: The last three H2Hs are evenly split with one win apiece and a draw, with all three games featuring both teams scoring and two Red Star goals.
Bayern has topped their CL group in eight of the last 11 seasons (72.73%).
Red Star has scored at least two goals in all six of their league matches this season.
