CIKARANG: Captain Baddrol Bakhtiar has warned his Under-23 charges that Japan, who have sent their Under-21 squad for the Asian Games, will not be a walk in the park in Friday’s last-16 clash.
Ong Kim Swee’s squad have grabbed attention in Indonesia by topping Group E to qualify for the knockout stage while Japan were runners-up in Group D.
Japan, managed by Hajime Moriyasu, are using the Asian Games to prepare for the 2020 Olympics Games in Tokyo.
Baddrol regards Japan as favourites and he hopes Malaysia can achieve a miracle against the Asian giants.
“We cannot afford to take Japan lightly. They have been groomed for a number of years. They have an advantage in that sense,” said Baddrol.
“I watched them play recently and I believe they have very high team spirit and also have a tight defence.
“We will try and analyse areas they are weak in for us to exploit. Of course, the goal is to win the match and qualify for the quarter-finals.”
Baddrol added that his players need to play tight in all departments.
“We need to perform to our full potential in hope of a good result.”
