A chance for one of these early Group H front-runners to maintain a 100 per cent record.
Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) were convincing in their 3-0 home win over Persija Jakarta in their opening fixture in this year’s competition, but this match may pose a bigger threat as they travel to Nghe An province to face Vietnamese side Song Lam, who were clear 2-0 winners on the road against Tampines Rovers a fortnight ago.
Song Lam could to be the fresher of the two sides considering the domestic season only starts in March last year. The 2017 Vietnamese Cup winners laid down a marker for the group considering it was an away tie, but the Southern Tigers have the experience of competing in the tournament every year since winning on their 2015 debut.
The four-time consecutive Malaysia Super League (MSL) champions may feel some superiority to their counterparts considering Song Lam only managed an eighth place finish in the V.League 1 last year.
The Southern Tigers, however, have been rocked by the sudden departure of Ulisses Morais from the dugout after the Portuguese quit the club citing “health reasons in the family”.
The club has the talent to go on cruise control against many regional teams, but Morais’ lively character in the technical area provided excitement and drive. His coaching also had JDT dominating matches and dictating the tempo more so than in previous years.
With Morais out of the picture now, assistants Raul Longhi and Ismail Ibrahim are expected to take charge, but neither are likely to change the club’s tactical approach to this match.
JDT head coach Ulisses Morais steps down.
JDT have used the group stage to give some fringe players a run in previous seasons but the club did not do so against Persija in the opening match, fielding a strong side that gave the visitors no chance.
Yet with the first group win out of the way, and needing to travel across the South China Sea to face Sabah in the FA Cup third round, JDT could be tempted to give several second-stringers a run in this fixture.
Hariss Harun and S. Kunanlan did not start against Melaka United and are expected to return to the line-up, while the club will be without Gonzalo Cabrera as he is not registered for the AFC Cup.
Song Lam could to be the fresher of the two sides considering the domestic season only starts in March, but unlike JDT they do not have the best players in their country to call upon and only have one import, young Nigerian striker Michael Olaha.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Safiq Rahim: The JDT captain has faced a lot of criticism in Malaysia in recent times, largely stemming from his previous international retirement, but his quality remains. Safiq was arguably JDT’s best player in the 5-2 AFC Champions League qualifying defeat to Muangthong United in January and tore Persija to shreds last time out.
Michael Olaha: While the likes of Ho Khac Ngoc and Vo Ngoc Toan bossed the midfield for Song Lam against Tampines, it was this Nigerian that looked most dangerous in the final third. The 21-year-old forward isn’t a prolific scorer, but does get involved in the play a lot.
STANDING GROUP H:
- JDT 3 POINTS
- SONG LAM NGHE AN 3 POINTS
- TAMPINES ROVERS 0 POINTS
- PERSIJA JAKARTA 0 POINTS
FACTS AND FIGURES:
- JDT have four imports available for selection while Olaha is the only foreign player in Song Lam’s ranks
- JDT have reached the knock-out rounds at least in the last four editions of this tournament, while Song Lam previously played in the competition in 2012, where they did not get past the group stage.
- Song Lam lost to Terengganu 1-0 at home and 6-2 away the last time they faced a Malaysian side, while JDT have never faced a Vietnamese side in this competition.
- JDT have only won once in their last six away games in the AFC Cup, losing three and drawing the other two.
My idea is, jdt please dont underestimate this team, because anything can be happen.
